- Officials Needed!
If you have experience with Youth Soccer or Little League or pretty much any other sport at any level, you are familiar with Officials. You saw them at the game with their nifty Officials uniforms, they called balls and strikes or whistled when a player was offside, and then they collected their $25 fee and went home. Perhaps you even politely commented on their eyesight. They were likely not related to any of the players in the game.
Alas, summer swimming is different. We do not have paid Officials. Instead, we have parents and friends who volunteer their time to ensure a level playing field. Our Officials do not have nifty uniforms. They do not collect $25. But without them, we cannot have our swim meets.
This is the best time to get certified as an official. Attendance at a certification clinic is required, but this summer, the certification clinics continue to be held on-line (as well as in-person, in case you prefer that format). We have a decent number of certified officials already, but the truth is, we always need more. That way, folks can volunteer as much or as little as makes them comfortable. And don’t worry, it’s not difficult. We can ease you in at whatever pace works for you.
Please give it some thought. Tell a spouse or friend. Sign up together and you can text back and forth during the certification clinic. The schedule for the certification clinics is as follows: (you only need to choose one of the time slots)
To certify as a new Stroke & Turn Judge: [This is the most common entry-level position. As the name suggests, you observe the swimmers to ensure they are swimming the proper stroke.]
Thu, June 6, 7pm (ONLINE)
Sun, June 9, 8am (in-person at the Olney Swim Center)
Wed, June 12, 7pm (ONLINE)
To certify as a Starter: [This is another entry-level option. If you are comfortable hearing your own voice through a microphone, this might be for you.]
Tue, June 4, 7pm (ONLINE)
Sun, June 9, 8am (in-person at the Olney Swim Center)
To certify as a Referee: [This is the only position with a prerequisite, which is that you must be a certified S&T Judge for at least two years.]
Wed, June 5, 7pm (ONLINE)
Sun, June 9, 7pm (ONLINE)
Advance registration is required for all clinics. Go do it now and put it in your calendar so you don’t forget. These dates are coming up fast!
If you have year-round swimmers, RMSC offers discounts to certified officials!
- SwimTopia App
If you're reading this, then you know how to navigate to serpents.swimtopia.com. SwimTopia also has an App, which will allow you to RSVP to events and sign up for volunteer shifts. As we are able to import more and more data, it should allow you to see results and times for your swimmer(s). And you will receive notifications from coaches and Team Reps when news breaks or weather threatens.
The SwimTopia App also has a subscription-based Pro version. To my knowledge, we will not be using any of the features that require the paid version. Long story.
(If you have already paid, let us know if there are any bells & whistles that make the Pro version compelling.)
